£6.4m to harness tidal energy in Pembrokeshire

First Minister Carwyn Jones is to announce a £6.4m investment for a new tidal stream energy generator when he visits Pembrokeshire on Tuesday. The EU cash will enable the device to be manufactured and ready for use in 2012. Once installed, it will generate clean electricity from the tides off the west Wales coast. Mr Jones said that investing in renewable energy was key to building a low carbon economy in Wales. The £11m DeltaStream device will be sited on the seabed in Ramsay Sound, Pembrokeshire. It will generate electricity from tidal currents via three turbines and promises to have a minimal impact on the environment. Clean electricityMr Jones said: "Investing in renewable energy technologies is vital to build a low carbon economy and help drive forward Wales' ambitions to become a more sustainable nation. "We are committed to promoting the generation of clean electricity while protecting our natural environment." The funding also provides support for Welsh marine renewable energy company, Tidal Energy, which has developed the device.Managing director Martin Murphy, said: "This funding announcement comes at a pivotal stage in the project, and will provide Wales with a unique opportunity to develop and demonstrate a home-grown tidal stream ...

TEL public exhibition St Davids 17th 18th June

Welsh Marine Renewable Energy Company Tidal Energy Ltd – which received consent for its DeltaStream device at Ramsey Sound – will be holding public exhibitions on the project at St Davids City Hall on 17th and 18th June. Consent for the 12 month DeltaStream demonstration project was granted by the Welsh Government (WG) and the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) in March this year. Theproject is now able to progress to the next phase of its development; which will be the manufacture of the device, ready for its installation in 2012.Invented by Pembrokeshire engineer Richard Ayre, DeltaStream sits on the sea bed and uses tidal currents to generate clean electricity. It has been designed to minimise impact on the environment. Chris Williams, Development Director of Tidal Energy said, “This public exhibition is a very exciting one for us and we are pleased to be able to discuss with the community and other interested parties our plans for getting the DeltaStream device built and ready to go into the water. “The exhibition will explain our plans for the next 12months and will give details about the installation, operation, maintenance and decommissioning of the device.“This is our third public exhibition ...

Wales moves one step closer to capturing tidal energy potential

TEL get consents for Ramsey Sound project A unique project that will develop innovative technology to test clean electricity generation from the tides off the West Wales coast has received the necessary consents from the Department of Energy and Climate Change and the Welsh Assembly Government, Environment Minister, Jane Davidson announced today. The consents will allow Tidal Energy Ltd’s device, to provide a sustainable source of electricity to the people of St David’s during its 12 month test period, and will see the project powering around 1,000 homes. The project has received more than £500,000 from the European Regional Development Fund.  The 1.2MW tidal energy demonstration project which will be located at Ramsey Sound off Pembrokeshire will be the first of its kind in Wales.  The technology for the project is due to be assembled locally in order to provide skilled jobs and a welcome boost for the local economy. TEL update Sept 2010

TEL submitted the operating consent applications for the project last October, since when we have been in close communication with the regulators including the Welsh Assembly Government (WAG) and Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC).  We are hopeful that the consents will be granted in late October/November 2010, and in this case we are therefore planning our installation of DeltaStream towards the end of 2011. As soon as we have a firm timescale of events we plan to hold further public exhibitions in St Davids to keep you and rest of the community informed of the proposed steps. You may also be interested to know that BBC One's Countryfile programme has recorded a special on Pembrokeshire, featuring TEL's tidal project, which will be aired this Sunday - 12th September at 19:00 on BBC one. Matt Baker and Julia Bradbury explore the coast and countryside around St David's in Pembrokeshire. The pair go whitewater kayaking, and discover how the fierce tides in that part of West Wales can generate clean, green power.

The “first tidal power device of its kind” in Wales awarded grant from WAG

The "first tidal power device of its kind" in Wales has been awarded a grant of £572,000 from the Welsh Assembly Government through the European Regional Development Fund.Welsh environment minister Jane Davidson this week (July 26) announced the funding, which will go towards a feasibility study to develop the 1.2MW ‘DeltaStream' technology and assess the suitability of a site in West Wales for tidal stream testing. As part of the package, Tidal Energy Limited, the company behind the technology, will be able to carry out site surveys, environmental assessments and design work at the proposed demonstration site at Ramsey Sound, Pembrokeshire. The £1.4 million project has received £572,000 from the WAG under the European Fund - which aims to help stimulate economic development and regeneration - with the rest of the project finance to be out up by the developer.According to Tidal Energy Limited, the demonstration project will last for 12 months and during that period it will provide a "sustainable source of electricity to the people of St Davids". It is expected that the funding will lead to the deployment of a full-scale prototype device in 2011. Speaking about the funding, Ms Davidson said: "Earlier this year I launched ...
