Port Facilities/Skills

Milford Haven is a major port with full tidal access for the largest construction vessels, the entire range of support services for construction and good experience in operational vessels (PMSS, 2006).  The Energy Sector Skills Council recognise that the existing power generation workforce have the necessary transferable skills to meet the future needs of the Marine Renewable Energy sector (METG, 2009).

 Why Milford Haven?

Milford Haven waterway offers direct deep water access to the west of mainland Britain, and most berths have unrestricted beam access.  The Milford Haven Port Authority team has handled a number of onshore wind turbines with wide experience in project work, including loading and unloading of specialised heavy lifts and project equipment for the petrochemical and gas terminals on the Haven.   All the facilities on the Haven are close to steel fabricators, ship repairers, boat and barge builders, marine and other engineering of excellent quality.   Set amongst the energy giants around the Haven and benefiting from experienced local support services with a skilled workforce, development opportunities exist for complementary industries in the renewable, biofuels and manufacturing sector.  For more information visit Milford Haven Port Authority website

Blackbridge Deepwater Terminal – A unique development opportunity at the heart of the UK’s energy capital.

Blackbridge deep water facility is located on the North bank of the Milford Haven waterway, East of Milford Dock. Blackbridge is a brownfield site owned by Pembrokeshire County Council, which will be developed as a deep water terminal with adjacent facilities. It is proposed that the terminal will be operated by Milford Haven Port Authority. Currently in the early stages of development all infrastructure, buildings/warehousing will be constructed to suit customers’ specific requirements. The site will be rail served and a new access road will be constructed. The primary berth at Blackbridge will be approximately 700m long, with at least 17m depth at all states of the tide. It is a unique development site, ideal as a manufacturing, assembly and marine/support base for offshore wind, wave and tidal flow technologies.

Pembroke Port is located on the South bank of Milford Haven waterway and is owned and operated by Milford Haven Port Authority. There are quayside open storage areas and undercover storage (ambient and temperature controlled storage) may be available. Quays at Pembroke Port are up to 180m long, with up to 6.1m depth at all states of the tide. In addition to good road links, there is a twice-daily ferry service to Rosslare. Pembrokeshire Science and Technology Park

The Pembrokeshire Science and Technology Park  is an innovation centre near Pembroke Dock and was set up to support young science and technology businesses across a range of industry sectors.  It specialises in supporting companies looking to exploit renewable and sustainable energy resources. They provide companies with flexible, modern office space and access to specialist support services. What’s more, businesses based there can network with leading national and international companies and academics. The Park which is a partnership involving Pembrokeshire County Council, Swansea University and the Welsh Government, also houses the university’s Climate Change Research Centre which utilises the computing power of Blue Ice, an IBM supercomputer, to model various climate scenarios.
